‘Penelope Platypus’ is one of a series of eight that I am working on, representing the States and Territories of Australia.

I’ve called her Penelope because the name has several meanings including resembling a duck, weaver and in Greek Mythology, faithful wife of Odysseus. The Duck-billed Platypus female constructs a nest, mostly of reeds and leaves to lay her eggs. Little is known about the method of construction so maybe the female does a bit of weaving too!

The Platypus is the fauna emblem of NSW and the Waratah is the floral emblem.

I have included some flora native to each state and where possible some vulnerable and endangered flora.

The Platypus includes many flowers including, Waratah, Flannel Flower, Wonga Wonga, Blueberry Ash, West Australian Blue tinsel Lily(critically endangered), native Quandong, Golden Wattle( Commonwealth Floral emblem),Red and Green Kangaroo Paw, Common Eucalypt, Sturt Desert Pea, Bacon and Eggs, Bluebells, Tasmanian Sunshine Wattle, Wyalong Wattle.

Due to its delicate state, framed artwork is available exclusively via local delivery or pick-up on the Sunshine Coast. If shipping is desired, please arrange a courier with the artist after purchase.
